Ctrl.Alt.Shift presents United Underground

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

If you are in London this weekend don’t miss the United Underground event presented by Ctrl.Alt.Shift.

United Underground is a unique collaborative project with Cutting-edge street culture, film, live music, DJs, artwork and new-school activism – on Saturday 20th February,  hosted by the Southbank Centre, British Underground and Riz MC .

After a series of sell-out summer shows, for one night only, experimental youth movement Ctrl.Alt.Shift is bringing together the artists who are shaping London’s dynamic underground scene. The event has been created to promote exceptional new talent and activism, positioning music as a potential catalyst for change and highlighting the issue of conflict.

It promises to be an explosive evening, with performances from the likes of Trembling Bells and Aruba Red running alongside political speeches by journalist Ben White and former mayor Ken Livingston, uniting activists and performers from across the cultural and political spectrum.  Meanwhile, an interactive digital installation will allow people to add their own personal messages to a collective call for peace.

The night will also boast DJ sets and live music from the city’s best club nights, including Wiley’s Eskimo dance, Urban Nerds and the infamous Dirty Canvas, as well as acoustic performances from prolific cellist Laura Moody and Olivia Cheney, who is fresh from her tour with Zero 7.

From 12 noon onwards, Writings On The Wall is a free warm-up event, featuring a screen printing workshop led by Print Club London, and a live showcase of unsigned music acts and spoken word.

Since 2008, Ctrl.Alt.Shift has been working to politicise a new generation of activists for social justice using creativity, photography, film, stories, illustrations and music. (Tekst by Krista Booker)

MF Doom artwork by Alex Deforce

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

As we all know, or not know, Doom is touring in Europe coming weeks.

Finally he is coming. :-)   I discovered Doom 8 years ago and really enjoy listening his music.  He catched my moment several times.

He s coming to Belgium too.  Alex Deforce from On Point Tv made the artwork for the show in Brussels.

Who is Alex Deforce?

He is a friend , an artist, a blogger, a dj,  …

A description of himself , taken from his Myspace page:

a.k.a. =lloyd= pointdexter, holdin’ it down at www.on-point.be

Filling my days with drawing, interviewing, dj’ing, reading, promoting (co-organised Locoflows Festival in 2005) and perfectioning my coffeetechniques (mind you, there’s different methods to a style!)

An unhealthy coffee addiction resulting in periods of insomnia, which in time combined with an uncompromising just-let-me-do-my-thing attitude gave birth to a trademark style.

Faces marked by the tension of modern day life, balancing on the tipping point between the grime of the city and the frivolous facade of metropolis.
Warm in their darkness, refined in their dirtiness.

We looooove Alex and his art! And the ‘On Point’  moments …

Oh and don’t forget to check his artwork!

Hindi Zahra

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

Hindi Zahra brought me sunshine with her song Oursoul.  A song in Berber language.

As I am Berber too, we have the same roots, her song touched my in different ways.

Born in Khouribgha (Morocco), Touareg and Berber origin, Hindi Zahra strikes a vote without borders. Her music sounds like ancient blues, original jazz with some vibration from the Middle East, where she speaks about love, self-assertion, the world and things that inspire her. Born into a family of Berber artists , the Oudaden group  is one of the most famous of them. Her mother and uncles introduced her the traditional Gnawa music, the folk of Dylan, Marley’s reggae and the ancient rhythms and melodies of the finest Egyptian Directory. Self-taught musician, songwriter, Hindi is reflected in the plurality. The Wire describes her as the brainchild of Django Reinhardt and Billie Holiday. she occurred in the first part of Anis at Olympia, Oxmo Puccino at La Cigale where she participated in Bose Blue Note Jazz festival …

Her song “Beautiful Tango” is a revelation—simple yet sophisticated, sparse yet emotive. It’s fresh even while it reverberates with history.  This style continues in “Oursoul” and “Try.” A touch of hip-hop and soul influence, retaining the simple, downbeat understatement of her other songs while adding an almost ethereal quality.  Somewhere between her Moroccan roots and her life in Paris, singer-songwriter Hindi Zahra lost track of her many musical influences: the result is a mesmerizing elemental folk, a desert blues with african/american music.

Don’t forget to check her website or myspace.

We loooooove Hindi Zahra.

Enjoy this moment!

Pee Without Noise Stool

Saturday, January 9th, 2010

I found this bizarre item on Japan Trend Shop.  If you really want to pee without noise well this is the solution I guess.

Introducing you the Pee Without Noise Stool.

The Pee Without Noise Stool is one of those ideas that’s so cool we’re embarrassed we didn’t think of it before. We’ve all been there: it’s 2am in a sleeping house, your mother-in-law is right behind you in line for the potty, or you don’t want to broadcast the fact that you downed six glasses of beer over the course of your date.

As great as it is to be able to pee standing up, there are some situations where you just want to do your business discreetly, and having the outlet several feet above the bowl makes it hard to keep the volume down.

You could sit, but not only is that unbecoming a man, you also risk splashing the rim. Enter the Pee Without Noise stool. Kneeling on its soft cushions positions you at the exact right height to land your stream in the bowl at a much-reduced velocity and volume level. This simple, elegant tool could save your dignity, your relationship, or even your life (if there’s a robber in the house but you just have to go)!

When I discovered this I first toughed it was a joke.  But you can order this and choose from polyurethane DX or wood Eco models.

:-)

Kellogg’s Retro Lip Balms

Friday, January 8th, 2010

Cereal-flavoured lip balms? Yes, it is.  Kellogg’s brought in collaboration with the Japanese online retail design house Nut2deco a series of cereal-flavored lip balms.

You can choose between different flavours. Check here fore more details…

The cereal lip balms are made in Taiwan and the retro Lip Balms seems to be for Japan only at the moment.

I don’t know if I would like to have cereal-flavoured lip balm on my lips but it can be a nice birthday present.
