Contact “High” Lenses That Deliver Drugs

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

“Dry-eye sufferers and glaucoma patients may soon be able to trade their messy eye drops for a contact lens that delivers medication gradually over time.
Researchers have been working for nearly a decade on drug-dispensing contact lenses that could deliver eye medication more effectively, but they’ve struggled to design a lens that releases a continuous supply of the meds. Now, scientists report that they’ve created a contact lens that can deliver a high concentration of antibiotic at a constant rate for more than 30 days.
The main way our lens differs is that it can provide large amounts of drug released at constant rates for long periods of time, which previous discoveries have not been able to do,” said drug-delivery researcher Daniel Kohane of Harvard Medical School, who co-authored the paper published in the July issue of Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science. Past lenses have only been able to release a small amount of drug over a long period of time, or a substantial amount of drug for a day or two, he said.” Read more

Lalla Essaydi

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

“Lalla Essaydi is an artist / photographer.  She was born in Marrakech, lived as a young woman in Saudi Arabia. She studied her art in Paris and Boston and lives now in New York.
Lalla Essaydis photographic portraits capture a truly feminine spirituality, solitude and purity. Her subjects are always dressed in ghost like white (White being the colour worn by Moroccan women whilst in mourning.) she photographs these women in relaxed poses reminiscent of a bye gone era, similar to the 18th century orientalist artists who were fascinated with exposing the veiled women of the Harem. Lalla Essaydis work continues to expose the mystery to the western mind that surrounds the rituals of Muslim women in the present day.”

Harma Heikens

Saturday, July 18th, 2009

‘Grim’ and ‘disturbing’ are the words used to describe the mixed-media installations created by Harma Heikens, in which the artist burrows into the ragged edges of the human condition. In cartoon-like imagery Harma Heikens shows in her clear-cut scenes models of children whose existence seems to be a continuous tale of desperation and hopelessness. However, captured in colourful and detailed scenes, they are endowed with a tension which, in a subdued manner, provides the vicissitudes of their existence with a dose of purified cynicism. She is based in the Netherlands.

Fancy Fast Food

Friday, July 17th, 2009

Want a junk food fix, but fear losing your sophisticated edge? Erik Trinidad’s blog Fancy Fastfood has the answer. With the honest tag line, “Yeah, it’s still bad for you – but see how good it can look!”, Trinidad transforms convenience food into gourmet creations.
The photographs on his page shows extreme makeovers of actual fast food items purchased at popular fast food restaurants. No additional ingredients have been added except for an occasional simple garnish.

For example, The McSteak & Potatoes,  made by a McDonald’s Big Mac Extra Value Meal (#1) with a large fries and large Coca-Cola.  Looks tasty, isn’t it?

Check Fancy Fast Food to know how.

We loooooooove the idea!

The chandelier/showerhead

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

The chandelier/showerhead by Tannan Winter Design.

“This candle chandelier sits over a pedestal tub giving elegance and ambiance to the space; but also is completely functional as a showerhead.
The space where the chandelier/showerhead was going designed in a Victorian style bathroom. The Victorian Style has roots in Greek and Roman architecture. I wanted the chandelier to have those same roots; using the statue of Aphrodite as the base from which the chandelier/showerhead was designed keeps inspiration and feel consistent thought out the space.”
