The MessengerMirror

Friday, July 24th, 2009

The MessengerMirror is an eye/sunglass-mounted cycling mirror.

MessengerMirror allows you to view things approaching from behind and increases your safety on a bicycle when cars are present. Cooked up by a cyclist who was looking for a cycling mirror and found the available products (T-a-L, 3rdi) were too expensive, had their design flaws, and all were too bulky to have in his face.

The MessengerMirror is very compact so adjust your expectations of field-of-view accordingly. New riders, plus those familiar with other cycling mirrors, will quickly adjust and develop a method to best utilize it. It is designed to be fit on the left side of glasses but could be easily modified for right side use.

The vibrancy of architecture as a playground

Friday, July 24th, 2009

This body of work is part of a personal fine art series (by Alex & Cocco) based on Parkour or Free Running, capturing the motion of the human body within the architecture of our urban environments.
These environments can be very controlled places where movement is very restricted – they want to break down these barriers. This series is about far more than bricks and concrete. Architecture comes alive when used as an urban playground, offering a never-ending set of challenging surfaces and spaces to those willing to explore them.

Alex and Cocco are photographers based out of London & New York.

Distil Ennui: is a collection of works that attempt to capture the beguiling beauty of life’s everyday confinements, re-proposing the ordinary, the displaced and the overlooked.

What a moment….

Metamorphoses by Constanze Moll

Friday, July 24th, 2009

Constanze Mol is an illustrator based in Austria where she graduated from the Arts Institute at Bournemouth in June 2009.

“The Roman poet Ovid wrote an epic by the name of Metamorphoses, weaving together various Greek, Roman, and older myths into one reasonably cohesive narrative. Its general theme is, unsurprisingly, metamorphosis; physical transformation as the last and most powerful expression of some sort of internal sea change.
This project deals with the under- and misrepresentation of the epic’s female characters, who are portrayed as either disempowered or mad, frequently even monstrous. It’s a reinterpretation of these twelve stories, and an attempt at reappropriation.”

This was her Final Major Project in the 3rd year of university. She came up with the concept, did the illustrations, and designed and bound the book.

The Inc Calendar

Ink Calendar” make use the timed pace of the ink spreading on the paper to indicate time.
The ink is absorbed slowly, and the numbers in the calendar are “printed” daily. One a day, they are filled with ink until the end of the month. A calendar self-updated, which enhances the perception of time passing and not only signaling it.

The Thinking Bubble

A mirror that takes the cartoon speech bubbles as a reference and acknowledge the fact that we think in front of mirrors. The mirror as a container which filled by our image and thoughts.

The Profile

A simple family of lamps inspired by aluminium extrusions.
All elements on the lamp are clipped on the profile reducing the number of holding parts. The cable, which is clipped on the central channel, covers the fixings on the wall and becomes the central element on the light, rather that something to hide.
“Profile” can be easily produced from an aluminium profile as a freestanding or wall mounted lamp.

Yuken Teruya’s everyday objects

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

Yuken Teruya manipulates everyday objects, transforming their meanings to reflect on contemporary society and culture. Cutting trees out of paper bags and cardboard toilet paper rolls, he creates meticulous and intricate art works, small and enchanting worlds, which relate to broader concerns. In each bag and roll, the shape of a tree is created without adding or removing anything, just by cutting out and folding the paper from the bag itself. Teruya’s works explore issues such as the growing consumerism of contemporary society, depleting natural resources and other problems associated with globalism, including the threat it poses to localized cultural traditions and identities.  Born in Okinawa, Japan in 1973, he received his MFA from the school of Visual Arts, New York in 2001.
